Odds are if you are someone who listens to radio a lot then you don’t need me to tell you what podcasts are but for anyone out there who may not know by now, they are essentially radio shows on demand. The only real difference is (apart from the fact that they are going out live) is that they are often far more niche in their subjects, which is really great for those of you who are looking for something really specific. The truth is there are so many great podcasts out there, here I have listed just a few of those to whet your appetite.
Revisionist History – Anyone who follows journalism or sociology will likely have heard of Malcolm Gladwell, he’s the guy that made the 10,000 hours rule well known (a theory that you can master anything in that amount of time). Well this is his podcast and he covers everything from How to fix the American education system to the way our memory works. Each series has a range of topics, some as hard hitting as race relations and others as light (yet still just as interesting) as how McDonalds fries are cooked. Trust me once you start listening you won’t want to stop, and you’ll learn so much on the way.
The Ron Burgundy Podcast – Anyone who is a fan of Will Ferrell or the Anchorman films simply must check out this show. The Ron Burgundy Podcast stars Will Ferrell as the title character and we hear him cause misunderstandings and upset guests each episode in ways that will make you belly laugh. It features guests such as Deepak Chopra, Ru Paul and Peter Dinklage, each bringing different laughs to the table. My only advice is to listen somewhere that you mind laughing out loud because this will happen, and it can get pretty embarrassing in public.
Dan Snow’s History Hit – If it is history you’re looking for, then there are plenty of excellent shows out there, some general, some specific and some rather intense. In my opinion however the best history shows out there is Dan Snow’s History hit. Dan Snow himself is an expert in all things historic and a great presenter to boot, however he also interviews many amazing guests that range from fellow history buffs to famous actors. Each episode will tell you about a different time in history and there’s a huge back catalogue of them so theirs is plenty for you to get through.
Myths and Legends – Here we have a great show that is lovingly created by the husband and wife team Jason and Carissa that retells mythical and ancient stories from all over the globe in a way that even your children will understand and enjoy. Jason tells the stories and he does so with a nice sense of humour that will make you chuckle without overtaking the value of the tale. I can’t recommend this show enough, if you’re even slightly interested in the subject give it a listen, you won’t be disappointed.
